Have you ever found yourself tricked into watching a telenovela once? Or are you one of many people here in the homeland who acknowledge telenovelas as part of everyday life?
We may all have different reasons for watching telenovela but I know, at some point, you’ll do it with someone else. Watching TV together is just more fun here in the homeland, I guess.
When I was in my previous relationship, I had spent time watching telenovelas with my partner, which is pretty much a normal thing for couples.
I have to admit, ABSCBN, a popular media company here in the homeland, somehow showed creative improvement in their recent shows, one of which was ‘On the Wings of Love’.
I am not really fond of telenovelas in general so I couldn’t be bothered to show active interest in them. However, I was lucky enough to watch the first part of OTWOL’s last episode, which featured an unexpectedly powerful poem made by Juan Miguel Severo, who portrayed the character Rico in the show.
Juan Miguel, or Gege, was an acquaintance of mine back in college. He was an old friend of my org-mates in the University of the Philippines – Diliman. I don’t think he still remembers me but I do remember him and I knew of his poetic savvy, which was already known all over the campus and its periphery back then.
I guess I shouldn’t really be surprised that the guy came up with a haymaker of a poem that went through the heart. When I first heard of it, I’ll be honest, tears welled up in my eyes. The words, sentences, and the train of thought made my arms tingle in a hodgepodge of emotions lovers usually feel.
The poem struck a mean chord in me that time because I was going through a tumultuous episode in my life. Many people won’t believe how much crap my ex-partner and I went through just to reach our dreams as a couple.
Here are some things I experienced with love (pardon the cheesiness) that you may learn along the way.
- Love is crazy but it’s the only thing that will keep you sane.
- You will be torn between loving yourself and loving your partner.
- The world will want your love, but only a handful of people will love you back equally, or more.
- Love will make you achieve the impossible because it’ll make you do the impossible through seemingly impossible odds.
- When you love truly, you share lives with another person, but this does not mean that you have to live only for one another. You live one another.
- Love is not a feeling. For the most part, it is a choice… a choice founded on things beyond the laws of this universe.
- And even when relationships end, you’ll have no choice but to be happy for knowing that you’re able to create something so beautiful with another person.
- Love never disappears. It just changes course.
You, reader, have to read every line of his poem and you’ll know what you’ll truly learn in your journey through real love. You’ll know the true meaning of self-sacrifice, teamwork, value, compassion, unconditional love, and all things that keep us in one piece in this cruel, unrelenting world.
by Juan Miguel Severo
